Abelina: Platforming through a strange afterlife

We all have those big, sweeping questions about the unknown, especially when it comes to the afterlife. What if it exists? What does it look like? The fascinating thing is that I have no particular thoughts on the final destination, mainly because if there is one, I refuse to be disappointed.

It’s easy to fall into expectations, though. What if we imagine a perfect, hedonistic paradise? Only to be greeted by a roommate named Gary who exclusively eats cheese sandwiches? That kind of disappointment is simply unbearable!

I choose to leave those big imaginings to others on that front. Yet, pondering the concept of the unknown occasionally yields some surprisingly ripe fruit for reflection. This is precisely the kind of abstract thought that leads one to seek out truly surreal experiences.

Take, for instance, the platformer Abelina. This game manages to capture that sense of existential drift perfectly. It tells the story of a man who has passed away and finds himself adrift in a natural afterlife, engaged in the quiet, meditative tasks of tending gardens and carving masks. The core challenge of the experience is simply trying to navigate this strange realm while actively attempting to suppress the urge to think too deeply about what this place truly is.

It’s a beautiful, bizarre journey that reminds us that sometimes, the most profound truths are found not in grand answers, but in the strange, quiet spaces between the questions.
