Agents of SHIELD star’s low-key anger over canon status
Six years after its conclusion, one of the stars of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still buzzing with frustration: the wildly popular series Agents of SHIELD is not officially recognized as part of the MCU canon.
Chloe Bennett, who portrayed the iconic character of Daisy Johnson, recently expressed her lingering annoyance, arguing that the show deserves more acknowledgment among Marvel fans. In an interview, she reflected on the creative journey, noting that the series was a monumental undertaking, consisting of over 130 hour-long episodes that allowed for deep character development and immersion.
“I’m still low-key angry that they don’t fully acknowledge this as canon – the real followers will understand that,” Bennett shared. She highlighted the profound symbolic value of the show, emphasizing that the experience of watching the characters grow into their power held significant meaning for her throughout her career.
The disconnect between the show and the established MCU timeline is a major factor. The reality of Agents of SHIELD operated with its own set of rules, including elements like time travel, and it deliberately set aside major MCU events, such as The Blip. This framework, along with the SHIELD timeline not perfectly aligning with the main MCU narrative, made it challenging to fit neatly into the larger cinematic universe.
Despite these canon hurdles, Bennett remains enthusiastic about the world she created. When asked if she would return to the role of Daisy Johnson, she was immediately eager to say yes. “I’m obsessed with Daisy. I feel like I am Daisy,” she stated, adding that she would love to revisit the character with the growth she has gained since her time away from the role.
While the main SHIELD cast has not appeared in major MCU projects, the threads connecting the two universes are palpable. MCU characters have made cameos in the series, including Samuel L. Jackson’s portrayal of Nick Fury. Furthermore, subtle connections have emerged, such as an Agents of SHIELD easter egg appearing in a recent Daredevil finale, suggesting a potential link for future storytelling.
This potential suggests that the groundwork laid by the television series might pave the way for future exploration. Fans continue to hope that the rich mythology of Agents of SHIELD could eventually be recontextualized or given a reboot, allowing its characters to fully integrate into the broader Marvel universe.
