When developers unveil their work, they often showcase their skills in spectacular fashion. But in the world of real-time strategy, sometimes the most stunning defeats are not achieved by human ingenuity, but by the sheer, overwhelming force of the enemy artificial intelligence.

This humorous collision of human creativity and machine logic was the focus of a recent demonstration from the team behind Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4. Creative director Jan Theysen and senior game designer Elliott Verbiest, who are typically known for their PvP gameplay videos, decided to test the limits of the game by facing off against Hard AI Orks in a PvE team skirmish.

The goal was simple: see how the unforgiving enemy could handle their strategies. What they found, however, was a brutal lesson in overwhelming force. In their initial attempt, the two developers were utterly stomped. The first match concluded in just over four minutes, leaving them defeated by the relentless waves of the Orks.

Despite the swift loss, Theysen and Verbiest treated the defeat with characteristic developer humor. They joked about the difficulty settings, acknowledging that the game was designed to be challenging, but also admitting that the boss was meant to win. They made it clear that they were up for the challenge, even if the outcome was swift.

They pushed on, increasing the Victory Points required to extend the matches, hoping to find a sliver of redemption. But the Orks proved that there was no easy route. Facing continuous, devastating attacks, the team was starved of resources and simply unable to generate a viable response army.

After the first defeat, the developers were left with a sobering realization. “We are not that good at our own game,” Theysen wryly noted. “And also the AI is pretty strong.”

The second match, which lasted 13 minutes, offered a longer, albeit equally humbling, experience. Ultimately, the developers opted to hit the surrender button before the Orks delivered the final blow. It was a clear acknowledgment that the AI was a formidable opponent.

Yet, this session resonated deeply with the community. Fans found the video entertaining, not just for the defeat, but for the transparency it offered into the game’s mechanics. Comments reflected the shared experience, with many remarking on the sheer power of the Orks: “I will never do hard in a Warhammer game, Orks just nuke you.”

The demonstration effectively highlighted how potent the AI is in Dawn of War 4. It provided a real-time look at the game’s design philosophy, confirming that the challenge is not just in mastering the units, but in surviving the calculated brutality of the enemy.
