Arc Raiders Tests a Radical Shift: Can a PvE Mode Be Toggled Into Existence?

In a move that promises to reshape the dynamic of the extraction shooter, Embark Studios is throwing open the doors to a radical new experiment in Arc Raiders. The developers have announced a limited test, allowing players to toggle between traditional PvPvE matchmaking and a dedicated PvE-only co-op experience, kicking off this trial in October.

For a brief window, players will get to decide how they want to engage with the world of Arc Raiders. From October 13 through October 20, the choice will be simple: players can select PvE-only matchmaking, where solos, duos, and trios team up without any player-to-player damage, or stick to the established PvPvE mode. To account for the reduced risk in PvE scenarios, players in the PvE mode will also experience slightly less loot.

“This is, at least initially, a limited test,” the developers stated, emphasizing that this is an evaluation phase. They confirmed that this toggle is temporary, and once the testing period concludes, matchmaking will revert to the standard system. The goal is clear: harness player data to help shape the game’s future direction.

The motivation behind this experiment stems from clear player interest. The developers noted that a significant portion of the player base is focused on cooperative play, with 37% of players expressing interest in friendly co-op. This interest has grown consistently since the game’s launch, demonstrating a strong appetite for a dedicated PvE experience within the title.

While the concept is appealing, the decision is complex. Embark Studios acknowledged the inherent risk: introducing a PvE toggle could potentially diminish the tension that players currently enjoy. After all, the current PvP element is what many fans argue is the core reason Arc Raiders thrives.

However, the focus on player experience is paramount. The team is determined to respect the data, recognizing that some players want to enjoy the game in a different way. This test is not a guarantee for a permanent PvE mode, but it serves as a crucial indication that the developers are seriously considering this evolution.

Ultimately, this experiment pits player preference against game design philosophy. Whether the game finds success in balancing competitive aggression with cooperative exploration will depend on the feedback gathered during this test, signaling a potentially exciting path forward for the future of the extraction shooter.
