Blizzard brings a new character to Heroes of the Storm for the first time in 6 years
While Heroes of the Storm has largely settled into its role as Blizzard’s engaging MOBA mashup, the landscape of World of Warcraft storytelling is shifting toward a major conclusion. And as the game prepares for new developments, Blizzard is bringing a fresh, powerful addition to the fray: Xal’atath.
This highly anticipated character is set to join the Heroes of the Storm roster, marking the first new character since the introduction of Hogger back in 2020. The character arrives with a bang, making its debut in the Public Test Realm this Monday, September 14, with a full release scheduled for September 28.
Xal’atath is introduced as a ranged assassin defined by the devastating trait, Void Volley. Playing this role means mastering the art of void energy, where Soul Essence is built up through basic attacks. Once this meter is full, the assassin can unleash a barrage of void bolts at nearby targets while maintaining mobility.
Beyond the core attack mechanic, Xal’atath’s abilities offer dynamic movement and tactical depth. One signature ability allows the character to blink three times in a triangular pattern, dealing damage at each stop, and can be canceled for swift repositioning or escape. The character also wields potent crowd control through her Shadow Mark ability, which casts a large void orb that marks heroes, allowing the Dark Heart to detonate upon impact.
The hero’s kit is packed with high-octane action. The ability Dark Heart Ritual summons void energy to pulse at enemies before detonating on Shadow-Marked heroes. Furthermore, Xal’atath can summon relentless void minions through Void Convergence, overwhelming the battlefield and replacing fallen minions until the portal is destroyed.
The character’s progression is further enhanced by her ultimate, Void Eruption, which allows her to channel a growing void orb, dominate space, and then detonate in a massive area, fully empowered when cast upon the Dark Heart.
The arrival of Xal’atath signals more exciting content for Heroes of the Storm. While this character may be a standalone addition, hints have surfaced about potential future character introductions. With ongoing balance updates and the release of new cosmetic items, players can look forward to more substance and fresh characters arriving to keep the action thrilling in the game.
