Blood Pixels and Prosthetics Art
Get ready to dive into a nightmare where the line between pixels and reality dissolves. The retro survival horror experience Tenebris Somnia is hitting the Xbox store on October 16th, bringing a chilling fusion of classic game mechanics and stunning live-action cinema.
At its core, Tenebris Somnia follows Julia, a young woman grappling with terrifying nightmares about her ex-boyfriend. Seeking solace, she ventures into his apartment, only to discover that the horror lurking beyond her dreams is terrifyingly real. The game asks the fundamental question: what if our darkest fears weren’t just hallucinations?
This isn’t just a traditional game; it’s a cinematic event. The vision for Tenebris Somnia was spearheaded by filmmaker and indie game developer Andrés Borghi of Saibot Studios, who brought the concept to life with a sinister twist. Instead of relying on traditional cutscenes, Borghi opted for a truly immersive approach: live-action footage shot in real locations with real actors and practical special effects.
The magic unfolded when the team traveled to Buenos Aires to bring the vision to life. They collaborated with a legitimate professional crew, utilizing award-winning talent, including Marcos Berta, who oversaw the practical monster effects, and Argentine scream queen Clara Kovacic, who portrayed the game’s protagonist. Witnessing the production was like watching high-quality movie magic unfold: a 17th-century Argentine cathedral floor splattered with fake blood, and real stunt work involving careful lighting and physical effects.
This was achieved without resorting to digital shortcuts. The team relied on the old-fashioned method: human production, hand-drawn in-game art, and practical special effects. Monsters were brought to life using silicon masks and prosthetics molded directly from the performers’ faces, fitting them with makeup over several hours—a process mirroring major Hollywood production techniques. This dedication to authenticity ensured that the experience felt raw and genuine.
The brilliance of the game lies in how these cinematic moments are woven directly into the gameplay. Unlike many games where cutscenes are rewards, in Tenebris Somnia, the narrative is constantly suspenseful. Players never know when a harrowing scene will begin or end, keeping the tension high and forcing the player to remain in the thick of the action.
This fusion of pixel horror and live-action was not without its technical challenges, requiring careful planning to ensure film sets matched in-game locations. Fortunately, Andrés Borghi’s talent extends beyond directing; he is also a skilled VFX artist who masterfully blended the physical sets with seamless CGI to create believable, horrifying environments.
After nearly four years of dedicated production, the result is a truly unforgettable survival horror experience. Tenebris Somnia delivers classic elements—scary monsters, resource management, brutal boss fights, and a deeply unsettling plot—all wrapped in a unique identity. As the creator stated, the goal was for players to not just see the cutscenes, but to stay and experience the story.
Tenebris Somnia is now available on XBOX Series X|S, XBOX, and PC, available with XBOX Play Anywhere.
