When a game struggles, the developers often look for a fresh coat of paint. That is exactly what Bungie is doing with Marathon, attempting to inject new life and exciting gameplay into a title that has faced some headwinds since its March 2026 launch.

While the traditional extraction modes remain, Bungie is focusing its efforts on innovative new modes designed to ease players in and introduce familiar gameplay structures. Previous teasing hinted at experimental experiences like Vault Breaker, setting the stage for a significant shift in how players interact with the world.

The focus now is on broadening the appeal of Marathon by introducing modes that mirror the engaging experience players enjoy elsewhere. This involves adding a team deathmatch mode alongside new PvE experiences that draw inspiration from the rich atmosphere of Destiny.

To help new players find their footing, Bungie is also expanding Perimeter, the area that traditionally serves as a tutorial level, making it a more comprehensive zone that feels closer to the scope of other areas in the game. The overarching goal is to reduce the initial friction that new players often encounter, allowing them to naturally transition into the extraction mode that has historically been divisive.

Bungie has laid out a clear roadmap for these developments. The journey begins with a Nightfall refresh scheduled for October, followed by the Symbiosis update in December. This update is slated to introduce Marathon‘s first permanent PvE mode and the Team Deathmatch mode, promising a major expansion of the game’s content.

Marking the one-year anniversary of Marathon in March, Bungie is planning an even grander update, aiming to tie all these new gameplay modes together into a cohesive experience. This massive refresh will also feature a brand-new onboarding experience and the introduction of a colossal Tick Queen.

Beyond the immediate focus on Marathon, this development speaks to Bungie’s larger vision. Fans have firmly convinced the developers that the foundation of their identity remains rooted in the universe of Destiny. Developer Poria Torkan has emphasized this connection, stating that Destiny is the bedrock upon which everything else rests, and the team is far from done exploring that foundation.

Whether these new modes are enough to reignite Marathon’s popularity remains to be seen, but the commitment to evolving the game suggests an exciting future is being built, one update at a time.
