Bungie says Destiny is coming months after support ends
Even after a controversial decision to end support for Destiny 2, the promise of the cosmos hasn’t gone dark. Bungie has issued a powerful statement, asserting that they are absolutely not done with Destiny, signaling a determined effort to reclaim and redefine one of gaming’s most enduring universes.
In a recent five-minute upload, Bungie studio head Poria Torkan and head of product, GM of Marathon Josh Deane, addressed the community, confirming that the brand remains central to their vision. Their message was clear: they know they must earn the trust of players by delivering experiences that exceed expectations, and that journey begins with Destiny.
The goal, as clarified by Deane, is to “return Destiny to its original promise.” This isn’t just about re-releasing old content; it is about restoring the core feeling that defined the franchise—the awe-inspiring mystery, the deep sense of discovery, and the powerful bond of a community of Guardians rallying together against impossible odds.
This commitment stems from a recognition of the community’s power. Bungie emphasized that the voices of players mattered, noting how the collective action—through comments, demands, and engagement—reminded the team how much the world, its history, and its future still mean to the players.
To honor that impact, the team has committed to unvaulting essential elements of Destiny 2, including campaigns, destinations, and raids that were previously locked away. This move acknowledges that the vaulted content had a lasting effect on player trust and enjoyment, and the decision to vault those experiences was part of a difficult chapter.
However, the process of restoration is not simple. Bungie cautioned that bringing back this content is more complex than simply restoring old files. The changes implemented post-Beyond Light required updates to lighting, encounters, combatants, and other fundamental elements, meaning the work of restoration will be extensive and time-consuming.
Despite the complexity, the studio is determined. They are laying the foundation for new stories and games that they believe players deserve, aiming to build a future for Destiny while honoring its rich legacy. While the path forward involves careful, deliberate work, the commitment to the universe remains unshaken.
