Nearly two decades after the last mainline 2D adventure, the team behind the franchise has finally taken the keys to Dracula’s Castle for real with Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse. This new entry attempts to breathe fresh life into a 40-year-old legacy by mixing nostalgic lore with modern gameplay mechanics, resulting in a fascinating, if slightly complex, experience.

The story kicks off in Paris, approximately 23 years after the events of the classic Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. Our protagonist is Rose Belmont, tasked with confronting the darkness. With the family whip in hand and a mysterious set of Tarot cards guiding her path, Rose must delve into the heart of the supernatural to achieve the ultimate goal: vanquishing Dracula. It’s a narrative that honors the series’ history while introducing new twists revolving around the titular curse.

Rose Belmont is a compelling figure. While she is driven and determined, demonstrating the strength to tackle monumental challenges, she is far from a passive heroine. She carries the weight of her family’s legacy, evolving through her journey. She is the type of character who doesn’t wait for rescue; she actively seeks the solution, possessing a fierce spirit that reminds us of the heroes of the past.

Her quest is accompanied by a small cast of supporting characters, but the narrative often focuses on Rose’s internal journey. The interactions with other entities, particularly the souls of vanquished bosses sealed within Tarot cards, add layers of mystery. While these interactions are amusing, the experience ultimately centers on Rose’s personal struggle against the encroaching darkness.

The architecture of the game embraces the beloved Metroidvania structure, dividing the world into large, self-contained zones connected by pathways and ferryman doors. This map design encourages exploration, rewarding players with new abilities as they unlock hidden areas of Dracula’s sprawling domain. To ease the navigation, the game wisely incorporates modern conveniences like percentage trackers and map markers, helping players keep track of blocked paths and collectibles.

For those who enjoy backtracking and exploration, the game also offers unique navigational tools. Players can fast travel between save rooms within a region by using a clever trick involving crouching in front of a mirror, creating a small hub for choosing the next path. While a bit slow, these tools provide a welcome layer of convenience for managing the sprawling environment.

The combat system is a dynamic blend of old and new. Rose wields her whip, which serves as both a tool for agile movement and a weapon for delivering powerful strikes. She can swing between objects and enemies, demonstrating fluid, acrobatic combat. Additionally, she utilizes a light shield, a defensive tool perfect for parrying and reflecting damage. This emphasis places the player firmly in an offensive role, rewarding those who master timing and positioning.

Mechanically, the game pulls heavily from the soulslike playbook. Instead of traditional hearts, Rose manages a pool of mana, replenished by defeating enemies, which fuels her spells. This system removes traditional potion spam in favor of strategic combat, demanding precision and careful resource management from the player.

However, while the gameplay is engaging, some elements felt like a softening of the classic Castlevania identity. The world feels more like a solid Metroidvania layered with a Castlevania skin, and the core elements that once defined the series—like the interactive life of the castle or the iconic subweapons—have been streamlined. Furthermore, while the enemy designs are striking, the roster sometimes disappoints dedicated fans, missing some of the beloved classic monsters that once populated the realm.

Ultimately, Belmont’s Curse is a solid achievement. It successfully revives the atmosphere and introduces engaging new mechanics, offering a compelling adventure. It stands as a fun, challenging exploration of a familiar world, proving that even after two decades, the legacy of Dracula continues to inspire new and exciting journeys.
