The Analog Heart of Night City: How a Movie Buff Shaped Edgerunners’ Most Beloved Character

In the neon-drenched sprawl of Night City, where chrome and chrome-obsessed nomads rule, one character shines brighter than the digital haze: Roman. This enigmatic figure, the boy obsessed with analog film over braindances, is more than just a side character in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2; he is the unexpected emotional anchor that binds the chaotic world of the Edgerunners together.

But the creation of Roman wasn’t a simple plot decision. It was born out of pure, unadulterated passion for cinema. Showrunner and franchise VP Bartosz Sztybor revealed that Roman was not part of the initial pitch from CD Projekt Red or Studio Trigger. Instead, the character emerged later, forged during the intensive process of developing the storyline.

“Roman was not in the original pitch of Edgerunners 2. He was born out of passion for cinema,” Sztybor explained, pointing to the creative wellspring that gave the character his unique texture. He elaborated that during the eighteen months of back-and-forth story creation, they needed a figure that could connect the disparate characters in Night City.

The goal was to create a character rooted in a love for physical media and the art of film. By making Roman a true movie buff, the creators aimed to instill a sense of shared experience that resonated deeply with the characters navigating the brutal reality of the setting.

In the unfolding narrative of Season 2, Roman steps into this vital role, becoming the emotional glue that holds the disparate crew of Night City together. He is the bridge between complex, often conflicting, lives, linking the exploits of the Snake Nation nomad D. as he seeks revenge, the chrome-obsessed Talia, and veteran edgerunner King.

Roman’s presence transforms the story, offering a relatable, yet intensely stylized, perspective on the grim reality of the world. His journey highlights how the pursuit of art and personal connection can provide meaning even amidst the bleakest futures. While the world of Cyberpunk is relentlessly dark, Roman’s story injects a spark of analog warmth into the high-stakes drama.

The creative team’s focus on creating these deeply layered characters ultimately shaped a narrative that is both fiercely cinematic and deeply personal. Roman’s story is a testament to how passion—whether for film, life, or revolution—can define the unforgettable figures in a dystopian world.
