Charlie Cox: Son was ‘devastated’ by Daredevil cancellation
Sometimes, the most powerful stories aren’t found on screen, but in the private moments of life. For actor Charlie Cox, the recent news surrounding the conclusion of Daredevil: Born Again has brought a deeply personal layer to the conversation about superhero television, particularly when weighed against the expectations of his family.
The disappointment extended beyond the production world. Cox shared that the news of the show’s end was equally impactful for his six-year-old son. Speaking to People, he reflected on the weight of the experience: “I don’t think I am prepared for it. It’s been 12 years of my life. I think it’s very likely that at the end of my career, whenever that is, this character will be the most important to me. I don’t know if you can prepare yourself for that. I’m trying to prepare my son for it more than I’m preparing myself. He’s devastated.”
The moment he shared the news with his young son highlighted the profound emotional disconnect. Cox noted that his son, who was just entering the phase of loving the “my dad’s a superhero” concept, was deeply affected by the ending. “He’s six. So he’s just coming on to the ‘my dad’s a superhero’ kind of stuff,” he continued, noting that the color drained from his face when he told him.
While the emotional fallout was significant, the decision behind the show’s conclusion involved more complex business calculations. Marvel head of TV Brad Winderbaum previously indicated that the plan was to run the series for three seasons, mirroring the original Netflix run. However, Winderbaum suggested that viewership numbers played a crucial role in the decision.
Winderbaum emphasized that while the creative quality of “Save Daredevil“ was excellent, the true leverage lay in audience engagement. He pointed out that success in the streaming landscape requires more than just great storytelling; it requires visibility. “‘Save Daredevil’ is great but we also need ‘hashtag Watch Daredevil.’ The biggest leverage I have, and I say this all the time, is the actual viewership numbers. That’s what people are looking for.”
Despite the end of this particular narrative, the door remains open for cinematic possibilities. Cox is hopeful that this development will not signal a complete halt to his superhero journey. He believes that this experience might open avenues for his character to return to the broader MCU in future projects. As for the immediate future, the next installment of the series is slated for release in 2027.
