The world of city-building just got a serious upgrade, thanks to Paradox Interactive’s announcement of Cities: Skylines – Expanded Edition, a new port targeting the Nintendo Switch 2.

This latest offering brings Colossal Order’s beloved city-builder to a new generation of hardware, packaged with substantial new content. The Expanded Edition, developed by Tantalus Media—the team behind the The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword port—will arrive at a price of $49 and includes ten expansions. Beyond the standard experience, players gain a significantly larger buildable area of 25 tiles, full support for keyboard and mouse input, an integrated map editor, enhanced precision placement, and new environmental controls. Whether you prioritize visual quality with a 30fps mode or aim for smoother performance with a 60fps mode, there is a setting for every player.

The launch window is set for October 28, and those who already own a Switch 1 version will receive a generous 70% discount. On the same day, bonus content, including Holiday Getaways, Mansions & Manors, and Blueprint Beasts Radio packs, will also be released across PC, PS4, and Xbox One versions of the game.

While this new port is exciting, it serves as a stark reminder of the complex and often turbulent journey of the franchise. The path for the sequel, Cities: Skylines 2, has been nothing short of a roller coaster, marked by significant delays and technical hurdles.

When the sequel was initially slated for an October 2023 release across PC and consoles, the development faced rough states and necessary changes. The PC version launched with bugs, prompting developer Colossal Order to spend months diligently fixing issues.

The console ports were pushed back to Spring 2024, only to face further delays. The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S ports were delayed yet again to October 2024, as developers admitted they had not yet met the stability and performance targets they had set for the console release. Two years later, the awaited console versions remain elusive.

Adding to the ongoing mystery is the development status of the sequel itself. In November 2025, Iceflake Studios took over the development of Cities: Skylines 2 from Colossal Order, promising continuous work on the editor and console editions. Despite this change in hands, there has been no concrete update regarding the status of the console ports.

This development status is further complicated by other simultaneous projects, such as the announcement of Lego Skylines for PC and console. Though Tantalus Media developed the Expanded Edition, and Iceflake Studios is working on the sequel, the connection between these separate projects remains unclear.
