Cyberpunk Lore Confirms Edgerunners 2 Plot
The timeline for the Cyberpunk universe just got a little clearer, and it turns out, time absolutely does not stop in Night City. CD Projekt Red loremaster Patrick Mills has dropped a bombshell regarding the setting of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, confirming that the action unfolds in 2078, a year after the major events of the base game.
This revelation shifts the context of the narrative significantly, placing the story squarely after the chaotic events of Cyberpunk 2077. This temporal shift carries interesting implications, especially concerning the power dynamics of the world. For instance, the influence of the powerful corporation Arasaka is noticeably less dominant in Edgerunners 2 compared to the game’s timeline.
While fans often speculate about how this placement affects the overall canon, Mills assures the community that this move doesn’t force CD Projekt Red into making rigid decisions about what is or isn’t canon. It’s a fascinating situation, much like other massive franchises, where the established reality can bend and expand without needing to settle every detail immediately.
Beyond the anime, the world of Cyberpunk continues its relentless expansion. We are already seeing developments with the ongoing Cyberpunk 2 project, which promises to further flesh out the scope of Night City. Meanwhile, the franchise continues to evolve through other media, including live-action film, which CD Projekt Red has indicated will not retrace the steps of the game.
Amidst this ongoing expansion, CD Projekt Red is gearing up for a major content drop. The game is set to feature a surprise Edgerunners 2-themed update, promising exciting new mechanics such as expanded cyberware customization and a thrilling new dual-wielding playstyle.
This update builds on the success of previous additions, like the Cyberpunk 2077 Edgerunners update, which successfully introduced a questline centered on the iconic yellow jacket. Fans are eagerly anticipating the details of this new content, with further information set to be revealed on October 21, 2026, during a special episode of REDstreams.
