Dark Tower TV show still in limbo after platform switch
Even after nearly four years of radio silence, filmmaker Mike Flanagan insists that his ambitious television series based on Stephen King’s epic The Dark Tower is still very much alive and in development. Despite the inevitable hurdles of large-scale production, Flanagan acknowledges that bringing this sprawling narrative to life requires an enormous commitment from the studio, adding that the project is still on the table.
The challenge of adapting Stephen King’s dense and complex mythology is well known; the original 2017 live-action film already highlighted the rough edges of this adaptation. Flanagan’s vision involves a truly monumental undertaking: a series that would span five seasons, followed by two standalone feature films. This level of scope speaks to the sheer density of the King universe he is attempting to translate into the screen.
This ambitious project has seen various shifts in its trajectory. Flanagan had acquired the rights to The Dark Tower while still under his contract with Netflix, and he was reportedly working behind the scenes to refine the creative process. However, the transition to a streaming environment did not necessarily smooth the path; as he noted, the move to Prime Video did not make the adaptation process any easier.
