James Gunn, the visionary co-CEO of DC Studios, has thrown a wrench into the timeline for the DC Universe, confirming that The Suicide Squad is officially canon. While this announcement has delighted fans, it immediately sparked a flurry of questions about how this new entry fits into the broader mythology, particularly concerning Superman’s history.

One of the most enduring questions revolves around the shooting of Superman in the 2021 film. Fans wondered if Bloodsport truly defeated the Man of Steel, given the context of the events. Gunn addressed the chronological complexities, noting that the key factor isn’t necessarily a dramatic battle, but a sequence of events. He explained that when Bloodsport was shot with a Kryptonite bullet, it was not a defeat, but an incident.

The real headache, however, turned out to be the dates. Superman is slated for a future timeline, set for 2025, which creates a four-year gap with where DCU Chapter One places him. This chronological mismatch presented a fascinating logistical challenge for the creative team.

Gunn suggested that if the timeline seemed slightly askew, the fix was simple: adjust the timeline. He playfully suggested that to align the events more smoothly, The Suicide Squad could be set in 2023 or 2024.

Ultimately, Gunn admitted that trying to make all the timelines perfectly align is a futile endeavor. “People are always asking me about timelines,” the director stated, acknowledging the difficulty of creating a perfectly consistent narrative, and urged everyone to relax. “It’s not possible to make things perfectly line up.”

Despite the timeline gymnastics, the focus remains on the future. Fans can now look forward to the next major installment in the cinematic universe: Man of Tomorrow, which is scheduled to arrive in July 2027, promising more adventures for the DC Universe.
