Deadlock breaks Steam record with 228k players
Even in its closed beta phase, Valve’s shooter Deadlock continues to set new benchmarks. Following a massive update, the game has achieved a phenomenal milestone, surpassing 228,000 concurrent players, proving that the anticipation for this title is running incredibly high.
This explosive growth is largely thanks to the latest iteration, dubbed City Never Sleeps. This patch wasn’t just a simple polish; it was a deep dive into core gameplay, introducing a fresh layer of complexity and excitement for players already immersed in the mysterious world of Deadlock.
The update introduced a host of new elements, most notably six entirely new characters for players to explore. Among these fresh additions are memorable figures like Rat King, described as scrappy, regal, and tenacious; the explosives specialist, Deadman Danny; and the favorite, tea-drinking Baba. Each character brings distinct strategies to the table, opening up entirely new ways to navigate the rejigged environment.
The setting itself has also been overhauled. The central location of the game—a version of New York City—has been completely retooled, transforming it into a landscape filled with creepy crawlies and other terrors. This shift provides a perfectly eerie backdrop, especially with Halloween approaching.
Beyond the new characters and map changes, City Never Sleeps delivered significant mechanical improvements. Players now benefit from better voting systems, a greater selection of available items, and a wealth of other engaging options across various facets of the mysterious multiplayer experience.
The development team has offered insight into their priorities for this phase, explaining the philosophy behind the extensive changes. They noted that after the previous update, they felt it was time to focus on refining the core game mechanics before moving into further polish phases, such as updating older hero artwork.
This approach means that while elements like hero remodels, changes to Midboss, Guardians, and Walkers are definitely on the roadmap, the team decided to prioritize fleshing out the core game itself first. This strategy allowed them to address multiple aspects in parallel, resulting in a truly dynamic update.
The result of this focused effort is a continually evolving experience. While Deadlock remains invite-only at present, the sheer momentum and quality of the ongoing updates suggest that anyone who can gain access will find plenty to explore in this thriving, mysterious world.
