Derry Season 2 is a very bloody gangster picture via Pennywise
Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane is stirring up some seriously dark waters for fans of Stephen King, promising that the next chapter in the Derry saga will be dramatically different. Teasing details for It: Welcome to Derry season 2, Kane insists the upcoming season will feature a distinct “palette” compared to its predecessor.
“We’re making something very exciting for season 2 that I can’t talk too much about, but it’s got a different palette,” Kane shared. He is framing the new installment as a cinematic mashup, envisioning a Warner Bros. gangster picture filtered through the unsettling lens of Pennywise and Stephen King. This blend hints at a gritty, historical tone that promises to be far more intense than the first outing.
The setting itself is where the story takes a sharp turn. While season one was steeped in the 1960s, Season 2 is diving back another 27 years, transporting viewers to the 1930s. This shift allows the narrative to explore a different, equally disturbing piece of Derry history: the devastating Bradley Gang Massacre.
The historical backdrop is rich with dread. The massacre involves a band of criminals who ravaged Derry’s banks and stores, leading to a deadly shootout. Yet, as expected in the world of Stephen King, the presence of Pennywise is not far behind, feeding off the negative energy generated by such horrific events. It confirms that even amidst historical violence, the supernatural horror remains at the forefront.
The production process behind this new era is already buzzing with activity. Kane confirms that the team is deep into the writers’ room, churning out multiple scripts and breaking more than half the story for the upcoming season. They are currently edging into pre-production for what Kane calls a very bloody and fundamentally different experience.
Looking ahead, the cast is poised to undergo some significant changes. While the return of Bill Skarsgård as the iconic Pennywise is strongly anticipated, Kane and creator Andy Muschietti have confirmed that younger versions of the Season 1 characters will be featured. This necessary shift in timeline means that new, younger actors will be brought into the fold to populate this newly expanded, historical world.
This fresh direction signals that the creators are not just revisiting the lore, but are reimagining it, offering a new, adult-tinged perspective on the horrors of Derry. The show is still in its very early developmental stage, but the promise of a darker, historical, and more complex adventure is palpable.
