In the world of indie gaming, where creativity is the driving force, some developers find themselves stuck in an administrative labyrinth. Molleindustria, the team behind the open-world title Future? No Thanks!, is currently grappling with an inexplicable decision from the platform they rely on: Valve. Despite the game being rated for teens, it has been flagged as adult-only, leaving the development team desperately seeking clarity.

The confusion stems from Valve’s application of its content guidelines. Over the course of a month, the developers tracked the extended approval process, only to find that the platform had determined the game contained sexual content that is explicit or graphic and is intended for adults only, along with concerns about frequent nudity or sexual content. Furthermore, an achievement titled “Have Sex One Last Time” was deemed inappropriate.

The situation created immediate distress for the creators. Molleindustria described the experience as the most humiliating and surreal experience in 20+ years of gaming making, expressing a deep desire to understand the reasoning behind the platform’s decision and seeking guidance from within Valve.

This dilemma highlights a recurring tension in the digital distribution space. Valve’s historical approach to content classification has often been vague and inconsistent, forcing developers into an endless cycle of back-and-forth negotiations. This uncertainty places the biggest PC gaming platform in an awkward position, essentially gambling with whether or not a game will be buried in a category that the majority of users won’t see.

It is important to note the content of the game itself. <Future? No Thanks!> is far from being an explicit adult game. The narrative focuses on darker themes, exploring the final days of a conservative man set against a leftist utopia. While the Steam page notes references to drugs, tobacco, and sexual innuendo, the content does not contain anything explicitly adult.

Despite the game’s moderate content, the label has had real-world consequences. Currently, the game is completely unavailable in Germany due to local laws requiring age verification for games of that type, further complicating the distribution landscape for developers navigating Valve’s evolving policies.

As the developers wait for a resolution, the story of <Future? No Thanks!> serves as a reminder that even within seemingly regulated digital spaces, the lines of content and community standards can remain frustratingly blurry, leaving indie creators to wait and see what the platform ultimately decides.
