Devastated actor watches Jessie’s FF7 Remake fate
For many, stepping into a beloved fictional role is a dream realized. For voice actress Erica Lindbeck, playing Jessie in Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 Remake felt exactly like that—a long-held bucket list item.
Lindbeck, known for voicing numerous iconic characters across major franchises, shared her reflections on the experience. Booking the role of Jessie for the PSX trailer back in 2015 was one of her first major career milestones, making the opportunity inherently meaningful.
“It was just a bucket list role for anybody, or project—especially FF7,” she commented. While she was excited about the project, she also held a degree of anticipation regarding what fate awaited the character in the upcoming remake.
This anticipation, however, led to a profound emotional reaction once the story unfolded. What Lindbeck admits she did not know when she took on the role was the tragic conclusion that awaited Jessie in the remake.
The narrative paid off with a powerful, heartbreaking twist, mirroring the original JRPG. When the game brought Jessie to a tragic end, Lindbeck found herself genuinely devastated.
“When they dug the knife—and they chose to dig the knife in even further, so to speak—I was devastated,” she shared. The emotional weight of the character’s fate resonated deeply, amplified by her excellent performance and the new details the remake offered.
Despite the sorrow, Lindbeck maintained a philosophical outlook on the concept of mortality within fictional worlds. She mused that the presence of death is integral to life itself.
“But I think some deaths are necessary,” she added. “I think that if you have a universe with no death, things feel less heavy and less permanent, and I think that’s what gives life its meaning.”
