In a move that surprised many gamers, popular titles like Celeste and TowerFall have been delisted from the Xbox platform. This decision stems directly from the developers’ choice to protest Microsoft’s ties to the Israeli government, aligning their actions with the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Maddy Thorson, the creative force behind both games, confirmed the removal of the titles, stating that her team had opted out of the platform in support of the BDS movement, which advocates for freedom, justice, and equality for Palestinians.

While the removal might have caught some fans by surprise, the developers made the choice to prioritize their ethical stance over platform availability. This decision highlights a growing trend where game developers are using their visibility and reach to draw attention to geopolitical issues.

The BDS movement specifically targets companies involved with or invested in the Israeli government, and the removal of these games from the Xbox reflects this targeting. This is not an isolated event; other developers have also made similar calls.

For example, the developers of the co-op adventure game Big Walk followed suit earlier this fall. House House, the team behind Big Walk, explained that they removed the title from Xbox in accordance with the BDS movement’s call to boycott Microsoft.

They noted that if Microsoft were to divest from its Israeli ties and be removed from the BDS priority list, Big Walk would be brought back to the Xbox platform. This illustrates a collective effort by the gaming community to exert pressure on major corporations through consumer choices.

Despite the change in platform distribution, Celeste and TowerFall remain readily available for purchase on other major platforms, including PlayStation, PC, and Nintendo Switch, ensuring that the games continue to reach a wide audience.
