Diablo 4 Dev Team Reacts to Netflix Show
The world of gaming is buzzing with anticipation, and the newest source of excitement is coming from the depths of Blizzard Entertainment. During the recent BlizzCon Opening Ceremony, the reveal that an animated series based on the beloved world of Diablo is in development has sent development teams into a state of pure, unadulterated glee.
Blizzard president Johanna Faries hinted at the existence of this new animated series, though she kept the specifics under wraps. This promise alone, however, was enough to ignite a collective fire among the creators. For the team behind Diablo 4, the potential for cross-media storytelling is proving to be the most thrilling development yet.
Brent Gibson, the Game Director for Diablo 4, admitted that the news of the potential show is perhaps the most exciting development, even surpassing the widely anticipated release date for Diablo 5 in 2029 or the various updates and ports for the game.
“I’m a story guy,” Gibson shared. “I want to see more story, as much story as you can get. We’re narrowing in on finding the creative team for the show, and we’re delivering on what Johanna was saying—we are Blizzard Entertainment. I think Diablo is a perfect world to start telling those stories, so I couldn’t be more happy that we’re getting a show.”
This enthusiasm isn’t just internal. Season Lead for Diablo 4, Owen Leach, echoed the sentiment, finding the media adaptation to be the ultimate fan response.
“The show is my fan answer for what I’m most excited about,” Leach declared. “I’ve seen animated shows on Netflix, and I just think, ‘Hell yes.’”
The discussion quickly moved beyond the animated series to the broader landscape of intellectual property. Gibson suggested that the existence of multiple media formats creates a dynamic and unpredictable environment, drawing parallels to other successful franchises. He pointed to how other adaptations, such as Fallout, have fueled massive game resurrections, noting that the relationship between games and media is a wild west where outcomes are rarely predictable.
The excitement also centered on the ongoing evolution of the Diablo universe. Leach expressed deep joy for the continued development of the current title, particularly the impending anniversary.
“I’m so excited for Diablo to be in Diablo 4,” Leach noted. “We’ve got 20 new bosses—including Na-Krul from Diablo: Hellfire! I can’t wait for players to celebrate the 30th anniversary with us.”
Furthermore, the focus remains firmly on player experience and access. Gibson highlighted the breakthrough quality of getting the game onto handheld platforms, noting the growing audience that has been missed. He expressed happiness that players can now enjoy the game wherever they want, whether on a console or a PC.
Leach agreed, emphasizing the freedom of choice in gameplay. He mentioned the flexibility of playing on various devices, noting that the ability to move between platforms—from the couch to the PC—is a massive win for the player.
With the story unfolding, the promise of a new animated adventure alongside the continued evolution of the Diablo franchise ensures that the world of Blizzard is set to deliver an epic narrative for years to come.
