The upcoming launch of Diablo 5 is set to redefine the class structure of the franchise, promising players a much richer, more diverse roster than ever before. Game director Joe Shely has revealed plans to equip the new installment with more classes than any other title in the series, signaling a major evolution for the dark fantasy universe.

During a recent appearance at BlizzCon 2026, Shely offered tantalizing details about the expansion of the game’s potential roster. The goal is clear: to offer players a selection that honors the deep history of the series while carving out exciting new avenues for gameplay.

Diablo 5 is going to launch with more classes than ever before,” Shely stated. He emphasized that this expansion isn’t just about adding a few new options; it’s about increasing the total number of classes available to the player base.

Blizzard is aiming for a launch lineup potentially featuring nine or ten classes, depending on how the recently introduced Amazon class from Diablo 4 is factored in. This ambitious scope allows the developers to balance deep tradition with fresh, unexplored territory.

One of the key motivations behind this move is the ability to satisfy player nostalgia while introducing genuine innovation. Shely explained that by providing a wider variety of roles, the team can bring back familiar concepts while giving them a new spin.

“It allows us to have an experience that’s familiar and new at the same time,” Shely noted. He pointed out that players will still recognize core gameplay elements, such as the Twin Crossbow wielded by the Demon Hunter, but the entire experience will feel refreshed and novel.

This expanded framework provides the space needed to introduce exciting new archetypes. Among the classes being developed, players can anticipate seeing the addition of the enigmatic Plague Knight, representing a fresh and unique approach to character building within the world of Sanctuary.

Beyond the class roster, the ongoing narrative surrounding the franchise is also evolving. While the class system expands, the lore continues to deepen with seasonal content. The upcoming Season of Hell’s Legacy will bring back iconic figures like Deckard Cain, tasking players with confronting the echoes of the Prime Evils, including Diablo himself, further enriching the world’s history.

The vision for Diablo 5 is one of continuous evolution—a game set to deliver not just familiar dark fantasy thrills, but a vast and dynamic landscape of character choices.
