When you think about video game soundtracks, few achieve the visceral intensity of Mick Gordon’s work on the Doom franchise. The music from Doom and its sequel, Doom Eternal, isn’t just background noise; it is the very soundtrack to a brutal, relentless experience. Gordon managed to capture the rip-and-tear ferocity of the gameplay with heavy beats and uncompromising sonic violence, crafting an atmosphere that feels as raw as the action onscreen.

Behind this auditory savagery, Gordon didn’t just rely on standard composition tools. He went further, building a custom analog effects and audio-routing rig specifically designed to transform the most brutal sounds into harmonic violence. This attention to detail underscores his unique approach to sound design—he doesn’t just score games; he engineers experiences.

For Gordon, bringing these epic scores to life is less about composing from scratch and more about discovery. He views himself as a musical archeologist, embarking on the task of uncovering sounds that are already inherent in the source material. As he put it, the music is already present; his job is to use delicate tools and a careful hand to unearth it, polish it up, and then send it out into the universe.

“My job is to turn up with a delicate set of tools and very carefully—with a very delicate brush and a very careful hand—start uncovering what I feel is already there,” Gordon explained. “The sound or the music is already there, and the job I feel is to uncover it and very, very delicately unearth it, polish it up. And then send it out into the universe.”

This philosophy extends to how he credits his audience. Gordon believes that once he has done his part—saving the audio files and sending them to the developers—his involvement ends. He attributes the longevity and impact of these soundtracks entirely to the fans, who provide the airtime by enjoying the work. He trusts that the audience deserves as much credit as he does for prolonging these incredible sonic journeys.

Following his intensely creative period on Doom Eternal, Gordon has continued to lend his talents across the gaming landscape. After taking a sabbatical, he has expanded his musical portfolio by contributing to various projects, including Atomic Heart and Routine. Now, he is gearing up for his next major endeavor: riffing and tearing through the music for the upcoming cyberpunk FPS game, Defect.

The journey of Mick Gordon proves that sometimes the greatest art isn’t what you create entirely, but what you are uniquely positioned to reveal. His legacy is a testament to how powerful sound design can be when approached with both an archaeologist’s curiosity and an artist’s flair for the dramatic.
