The gaming world lost a truly unique talent with the passing of Richard “Levelord” Gray, who left behind a legacy etched in the architecture of classic FPS and adventure games. Gray, who passed away on October 12, 2026, at the age of 68, was much more than just a level designer; he was an architect of worlds, known for weaving intricate environments and hiding delightful surprises for players.

Gray’s journey into game development began with making modded levels for Doom, which quickly propelled him into the professional arena. He made his official game development debut as a designer for Duke Nukem 3D, but his influence stretched far beyond that. He went on to shape environments for iconic titles like Quake, Half-Life: Opposing Force, and Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, and played a primary role on the game Sin.

His skill in crafting these virtual spaces earned him the memorable moniker Levelord. Gray had a knack for adding hidden Easter eggs—secret messages and clever details—into his maps, inviting players to explore and uncover hidden secrets. One of his most famous creations remains the enigmatic message found in many of his maps: “You’re not supposed to be here – Levelord.”

The impact of Richard Gray extended far beyond the code. Those who worked alongside him spoke of a man who was both a relentless hard worker and a genuinely good human being. Apogee founder Scott Miller recalled him as a “stellar talent” who joined the industry in his 40s, describing him as a “fun teammate” and an “overall great human.”

Fellow industry veterans echoed this sentiment. Longtime 3D Realms community manager Joe Siegler said Gray was “like the friend to everyone,” enjoying a wonderful fortune working directly with him. The creative friction Gray sometimes encountered over feedback was offset by his strong artistic vision, a quality praised by 3D Realms co-founder George Broussard, who noted that while there was sometimes friction, the results always spoke for themselves.

The tributes from legendary figures cemented Gray’s place in gaming history. Doom co-creator John Romero paid tribute, calling Gray “full of life, a gentle soul, and an excellent level designer,” and specifically praised the distinctive designs of Duke Nukem 3D. Even creators from later generations acknowledged his foundational role. Cliff Bleszinski, the creator of Gears of War, remarked that Gray “broke the mold, fella. Guy paved the way for so many level/environment designers.”

Frederik Schreiber, founder of Slipgate Ironworks, described Gray as “without a doubt, one of the kindest people I’ve ever met in the games industry,” highlighting his humility, intelligence, and endless creativity. Richard Gray’s work and spirit continue to inspire those who build and explore the digital landscapes we inhabit.
