Double Fine holds all game IP after Xbox split Psychonauts Studio confirms
Double Fine Regains Creative Control, Paving a New Runway for Gaming Innovation
The landscape of gaming IP ownership has shifted, and Double Fine Productions has successfully reclaimed its creative footing. The developer, known for crafting beloved titles like Psychonauts and Brutal Legend, has secured the publishing rights for all games released under Microsoft following its separation from Xbox.
This significant legal victory clears the path for the studio to focus entirely on the creative direction of its future projects. CEO Tim Schafer recently clarified this position during an interview, emphasizing the importance of community support. He explained that the transfer of intellectual property rights returned to the studio, granting them the authority to manage their catalog and continue flexing their creative muscles.
“When people buy our games, it supports the studio,” Schafer stated. “We can turn that money into revenue that helps us extend that runway.”
This clarification comes amid broader industry changes. During a recent restructuring plan involving Xbox, Double Fine, along with other studios like Compulsion Games, was promised retention of their IP and catalog, which provided a much-needed window for the team to focus on their craft.
With the IP situation settled, the studio is now channeling this momentum into exciting new endeavors. To extend their creative runway, Double Fine launched a new initiative: the Amnesia Fortnight 2026 Kickstarter campaign.
This crowdfunding effort is set to result in an intensive game jam running through August and September. The unique element of the campaign is that backers will have a say, choosing which ideas make it through to the prototyping stage, with the potential for one concept to evolve into a full, small game. Adding to the transparency, 2 Player Productions will be filming the entire process, aiming to produce a documentary about the development journey.
Despite the recent transition, the creative engine at Double Fine is clearly running strong. Schafer confirmed that the team is actively working on other projects, with inspiration drawn from acclaimed titles such as Keeper, Psychonauts 2, and Kiln. Whether it’s new maps and modes for their multiplayer game Kiln, or other concepts, the studio is clearly deep into developing an exciting new chapter.
The path forward is less uncertain than before, fueled by creative freedom and a strong community partnership. Double Fine is not just navigating a legal shift; they are actively building a longer, more creative runway for the games they love.
