EA Saudi takeover deal set to close next week
A monumental shift is underway in the gaming world as Electronic Arts prepares for a massive takeover, poised to become a private entity under the stewardship of an investors’ group led by the Saudi Arabian government.
This colossal deal, valued at $55 billion, isn’t just a transaction; it’s among the largest ever witnessed in the gaming industry. The regulatory hurdles have been cleared, and Electronic Arts is expected to finalize the merger around August 4, 2026.
The deal involves several key players beyond Saudi Arabia. Alongside the sovereign wealth fund, the transaction is backed by private-equity firms Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, the latter being founded by Jared Kushner, son-in-law to former President Donald Trump.
While the financial scope of the acquisition is staggering, the move comes at a complex time for EA. The company has recently navigated significant internal turbulence, marked by widespread layoffs and the cancellation of several ambitious projects over recent years. Much of its focus has been channeled into key franchises like Battlefield as resources were realigned.
However, even amidst these corporate shakeups, questions linger about the geopolitical implications of this ownership change. Critics are naturally concerned about how Saudi Arabia’s involvement might influence the thematic content and core values embedded within EA’s games. This concern is particularly acute regarding long-running series like The Sims series, though definitive statements on this front remain elusive.
The leadership changes at EA also draw attention. Recently, CEO Andrew Wilson received a substantial pay increase even as the company implemented significant workforce reductions, raising further questions about the priorities shaping the organization during this period of transition.
Beyond the acquisition itself, the newly private company will inherit a tremendous amount of debt, adding another layer of financial complexity to what is already an enormous undertaking. The future of Electronic Arts will be defined by how it manages this massive shift—balancing staggering financial ambition with artistic freedom and corporate responsibility.
