Edgerunners creator faces DMs to bring David back but says no
The shadow of expectation can be heavy, especially when you are a creator navigating the complex world of popular media. For Bartosz Sztybor, the showrunner behind Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the pressure to bring back a beloved character for a second season was immense.
He has reportedly faced dozens of direct messages each day asking for David to return. While the desire among fans for continuity is understandable, Sztybor felt compelled to push back, believing that the future of the story required a different trajectory to honor the intellectual property.
His reasoning was clear: if the goal was to stay true to the spirit of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the second season needed to be something entirely new. He sensed that simply reinstating a familiar figure would disappoint the audience that had embraced the original series.
This creative pivot resulted in a fresh canvas. Instead of following the previous crew, the narrative shifts focus to a quartet of new protagonists navigating the chrome-lined streets of Night City: the fading edgerunner Weak Kingsley, the camera-obsessed Roman, nomad D., and the chrome-infused Talia.
Sztybor admitted that moving away from the characters responsible for the show’s initial success caused him some internal turmoil, describing the experience as having “nightmares.” Yet, he remained steadfast in his decision, proud of the bold choice to create something distinctly different.
This rebellious approach was supported by the creative environment, with the involvement of Studio Trigger providing the necessary impetus for a unique direction. Their “rebel approach” proved incredibly helpful in forging this new path.
Despite the shift, the initial reactions to the season without David were overwhelmingly positive. Early feedback suggested that the story had landed with force, hinting that the upcoming season could be just as compelling as the original 2022 masterpiece.
