And I have never thought to myself that realism is fun. I go play games to have fun.”

This sentiment underscores a core principle of game design: reality can be tedious and limiting, and trying to make every element absolutely true-to-life often detracts from the experience. Instead, games aim to construct a reality that serves the gameplay goals, rather than striving for perfect physical accuracy.

But Newell’s deeper insight lies in understanding how fun is actually created within this constructed reality. He points toward behavioral science, suggesting that the sense of fun comes from how the game responds to player choices and actions. He describes this dynamic using concepts like reinforcers and reinforcement schedules, drawing parallels to experiments like the Skinner box.

For a game to be rewarding, it must acknowledge and respond to the player’s input. If a player interacts with the world, the game must provide observable consequences, big or small, making the experience meaningful and encouraging repetition. This is the difference between simply depicting a world and building an interactive experience.

For instance, if a player shoots an object, the game needs to acknowledge that action through visual feedback—damage decals, reactions, and consequential changes in the environment. This mechanism allows for immersive gameplay where players can explore complex interaction chains, such as those found in immersive sims or reactive RPGs, where fringe choices lead to surprising and rewarding solutions.

Ultimately, the most crucial element, Newell argues, is the game’s ability to acknowledge the player’s progression. If the world ignores the player’s choices, the impact is lost.
