FF14 raid starts with an infamous boss being bodied
In the world of Final Fantasy, some battles are defined not just by the damage dealt, but by the sheer presence of the adversaries. For those who appreciate deep lore and challenging encounters, this dynamic is particularly evident when looking at the design philosophy behind colossal foes like Absolute Virtue.
Masayoshi Ishikawa, a battle content designer for Final Fantasy XIV, recently offered insight into how he crafted one of the most memorable moments in recent memory: the confrontation with Shantotto in Final Fantasy 14‘s Windurst: The Third Walk.
Ishikawa explained that his goal was not simply to present a difficult fight, but to truly showcase the terrifying strength of Shantotto. To achieve this, he took creative liberties with the sequence leading up to the battle.
Rather than relying solely on combat mechanics, Ishikawa noted that he wanted players to understand the magnitude of the threat before the first attack was even launched. “The cherry on top is that she defeats Absolute Virtue in the cutscene before the battle starts,” he quipped. This narrative choice served as a powerful demonstration of Shantotto’s dominance.
This subtle but significant design decision speaks volumes about the perceived power levels within the Final Fantasy universe. Absolute Virtue, a figure infamous across the series for being one of the most formidable super bosses, carried immense weight long before the actual combat began.
Ishikawa admitted that while battle damage is important, it doesn’t fully capture the essence of this particular confrontation. The true demonstration of power, he suggested, lies in who a character defeats prior to the fight starting.
When asked if Absolute Virtue would have been the opening adversary for Windurst had that pre-fight cutscene not existed, Ishikawa laughed, suggesting the possibility, but admitted he shouldn’t have teased the audience with such a good time.
Absolute Virtue’s legacy is steeped in difficulty. Throughout the years following its introduction, Square Enix faced scrutiny regarding how players were challenged by this boss. While adjustments and nerfs eventually came into play after receiving feedback, the original encounter remains a benchmark for epic confrontation in the franchise.
