Former Disney CEO has no memory of approving Kingdom Hearts

For many, the world of Kingdom Hearts is synonymous with adventure and emotional depth. Yet, for those who shaped the landscape of entertainment, such as former Disney CEO Michael Eisner, the origins of this iconic franchise seem to have slipped into the realm of forgotten history. It seems that even titans of industry can occasionally misplace a memory when it comes to go-ahead decisions.

The curiosity surrounding why Eisner had approved the game—which launched on PlayStation 2 in 2002—led reporters to seek clarification. When asked about giving the green light for the series, Eisner simply responded, “No.”

However, digging into the backstory revealed a far more colorful tale behind that seemingly simple denial. The initial pitch for Kingdom Hearts was presented in Tokyo as a creative crossover blending characters from Final Fantasy and Disney. While this provided a slight jog for Eisner’s memory, he still seemed to struggle to recall the exact rationale behind his thumbs-up.

The true origin story of the franchise itself is steeped in serendipity. The idea sparked from a chance encounter between Square’s Shinji Hashimoto and a Disney executive during an elevator ride—a perfect example of how some of the greatest creative leaps happen through unexpected collisions.

This history was once brought to light by those who were present at the initial meetings. Shuji Utsumi, then managing director for Disney Interactive’s Asia Pacific division, recounted the experience. He described running the pitch by Eisner and over a hundred management members, noting that Eisner’s demeanor was akin to an “ancient Chinese Emperor.” Despite the memory lapse about why he approved the project, his advice was clear: “Keep at it, and do it right.”

Though the initial approval might be fuzzy, the franchise has continued its journey. Fans are eagerly awaiting the release of the Kingdom Hearts I-III Collection in October. While some anticipation for new art has been tempered by questions about the quality of the visuals, the momentum remains strong.

Looking ahead, the franchise is poised for further developments. While details about Kingdom Hearts 4 remain under wraps, fans are keeping their eyes peeled for updates at upcoming events like the D23 expo, hoping for a glimpse into the next chapter of this beloved crossover adventure.
