Forza Studios Tag-Team Now United
The gaming landscape is undergoing a significant shakeup, as Microsoft announces a massive reorganization of its Xbox gaming division. This strategic shift signals major changes in how creative development is managed, particularly within the core Xbox portfolio, bringing exciting shifts in ownership and studio focus to the forefront.
At the heart of this change is a significant realignment involving the titans of gaming development. Activision and Bethesda are expanding their scope, adding several studios to their portfolio. This move consolidates creative power, setting the stage for a new era where cross-pollination of ideas might define future Xbox experiences.
A key development in this restructuring is the formal merging of two long-standing creative partners: Playground Games and Turn 10 Studios. These two teams, who have collaborated for over a decade on landmark titles, are now being brought into a single, unified development team. This decision formally moves their combined work into one cohesive unit.
Playground Games has carved out an influential space in the industry, most famously developing the inaugural Forza Horizon series. This franchise quickly ascended to become one of Xbox’s most tentpole gaming franchises, demonstrating the power of an arcade-inspired, high-energy approach to racing games.
Turn 10 Studios, established in 2001, brings another layer of history to the table, having been instrumental in developing racing games for Microsoft Game Studios. This studio’s legacy is deep, spanning the evolution of the racing genre within the Xbox ecosystem.
The merger brings together studios that have tackled different facets of racing simulation. While Playground excelled in the accessible, vibrant world of Horizon, other parts of the organization were focused on the more detailed, simulation-based experience of the Forza Motorsport series.
The recent corporate adjustments also involve significant workforce changes, with 268 positions being made redundant as part of a previously announced second wave of job cuts across Xbox. As mergers often lead to overlapping roles, it is understandable that positions across both legacy studios will be affected as they transition into a single entity.
The fate of the Forza Motorsport division is particularly telling. This series, which pursued a higher degree of sim-racing realism, faced operational changes following massive layoffs in mid-2025. Turn 10 Studios, in response, announced an end to new content development for Forza Motorsport, pivoting instead to work as a support studio for Playground.
This transition underscores the dynamic nature of the industry. As development strategies evolve, studios adapt, merging creative efforts to focus on shared goals and drive innovation forward. The combined force of Playground and Turn 10 Studios is now poised to redefine the future of racing and open-world gaming for the Xbox community.
