From jagged to smooth GTA 4 Mod adds DLSS and FSR

When developers release major titles, they usually come with a playbook—a set of rules dictating how the community can interact with the game. Rockstar Games, in preparing for the massive upcoming installment of Grand Theft Auto VI, recently updated its modding guidelines, setting clear boundaries for players looking to customize or expand their gaming experience.

These new guidelines establish firm boundaries: modders must refrain from creating unofficial main story expansions, pushing for unauthorized PC ports, or combining disparate GTA maps into new creations. It’s a clear attempt to maintain integrity and stability for the official release.

But as with any set of rules, there are always the edges that the creators conveniently overlook. While Rockstar has drawn a line regarding content creation, they haven’t explicitly addressed a more technical grey area that has become a hot topic among modders: the use of advanced upscaling technologies.

Specifically, the guidelines remain silent on the use of technologies like DLSS, DLAA, and FSR when applied to older titles. This silence allows modders to explore technical avenues that fall outside the scope of the official rules, leading to some rather creative—and technically thorny—projects.

A prime example of this gap is the work done on Grand Theft Auto IV. Despite the clear limitations placed on content mods, the community has successfully pursued technical enhancements for older classics. For instance, mods like ChunkLeChuck’s DLSS IV implementation have pushed the boundaries, integrating modern upscaling techniques into the framework of GTA IV.

This kind of technical modification highlights the difference between content authorization and technical experimentation. While official rules focus on what you can add to the game’s narrative, the modding community often thrives on exploring how the game engine itself can be pushed and optimized. It proves that even with strict developer guidelines, the spirit of modification often finds ingenious, if unauthorized, ways to evolve the experience.
