When Speedrunning Meets Ethics: Games Done Quick Steps Back on a Major Sponsorship

The excitement of celebrating gaming’s classics often comes with a heavy dose of community involvement, but sometimes that enthusiasm bumps up against serious ethical concerns. Recently, the charity speedrunning phenomenon Games Done Quick (GDQ) made a difficult decision regarding one of its major partnerships, choosing to cancel a sponsored stream following disclosures related to the game developer SNK.

The pause in action occurred just two hours into an exciting showcase celebrating the 30th anniversary of the classic run-and-gun shooter, Metal Slug. During the broadcast, host Twitch streamer Ateatree announced that GDQ had received formal notice prompting them to halt the planned stream. He informed the speedrunning duo that the decision stemmed from pressing concerns regarding the game developer’s ownership structure.

The core issue revolved around SNK’s relationship with Saudi Arabia. The controversy focused on the fact that SNK is under majority ownership by the MiSK Foundation, an organization linked to the crown prince of Saudi Arabia. This connection raised serious questions for GDQ about human rights and inclusivity, values that the charity group strives to uphold.

In response, Games Done Quick took immediate action. They announced they would not be proceeding with the sponsored stream or accepting future funding from SNK, arguing that the partnership conflicted with their core mission of supporting human rights. Furthermore, the organization issued an apology to the community, acknowledging that they had failed to conduct the level of review their community deserved regarding sponsors and partnerships.

This decision brought into sharp focus the tension between commercial entertainment and social responsibility. GDQ emphasized that ensuring its values were aligned with its partners was paramount, leading them to insist on closer examination of companies’ ownership structures moving forward.

SNK addressed the concerns about Saudi involvement, stating that their creative process remains independent of geopolitical issues. Producer and designer Yasuyuki Oda asserted that the relationship has no effect on their output, affirming their freedom to create without political constraint.

The cancellation did not overshadow the tremendous success of the event itself. The Summer Games Done Quick festival concluded successfully on July 12th, raising more than $2,408,701 for Doctors Without Borders and marking a strong end to its 16th iteration. It demonstrated that even when faced with complex ethical dilemmas, the community remains committed to supporting meaningful charitable causes through gaming.
