He teased that in this new era of conflict, Gandalf has finally arrived in season three, possessing true agency. “He’s been learning his stuff,” Weyman explained, noting a period of study amidst Tom Bombadil, and suggested that Gandalf is now equipped to influence what happens in Middle-earth as darkness looms.

The focus of Gandalf’s new mission appears deeply emotional rather than purely combative. He is reportedly on the lookout for individuals whose hearts have been chilled and seeks to rekindle them—to rewarm them and allow them to grow and love again. The hope is that viewers will witness him working alongside other forces to help defeat Sauron.

The showrunners, J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, also provided insight into the ambitious scope of the upcoming season.
