Gears of War E-Day Multiplayer Preview
After a seven-year wait, the Gears of War franchise is gearing up for a major multiplayer overhaul with the arrival of Gears of War: E-Day. As one of Xbox’s most celebrated franchises, the anticipation is high, and recent testing suggests that the revamped experience delivers both familiar action and genuinely refreshing mechanics.
The changes introduced to the controls are perhaps the most immediate adjustment players will notice. The series has shifted how movement and cover interaction work, prioritizing fluidity over rigid input. The A button is now fully dedicated to taking cover and navigating cover, while sprinting is handled by a left-stick click, introducing a more fluid method of movement. Furthermore, the Y button is assigned to vaulting—allowing players to jump into cover and move dynamically across the landscape.
This refinement has significantly enhanced the pace of both competitive and cooperative modes. In the PvP Versus mode, while the core philosophy remains centered on exploiting angles and utilizing cover effectively, the new movement system allows for quicker entry and exit from cover. This newfound nimbleness makes navigating tight encounters feel less constrained, injecting a welcome sense of speed into classic Gears combat.
In the arena battles, the traditional tactics of hip-firing and slide maneuvers remain relevant, yet they are now played with greater agility. Players can pop into positions faster, vault over obstacles effortlessly, and engage opponents with smoother transitions, loosening up the action without sacrificing the visceral feeling of fighting those iconic COG figures.
But the true centerpiece of Gears of War: E-Day is undoubtedly the new Horde Siege mode. Taking inspiration from the series’ long-standing wave-based PvE formula, this mode transforms multiplayer into a dynamic, emergent experience set across the expansive ruins of Kalona. Unlike traditional confined Horde maps, Horde Siege features multiple teams battling for objectives spread across a larger environment.
Teams are tasked with defending crucial R.I.G. positions while simultaneously managing relentless waves of Locust. Missions range from single-objective Blitz modes to Standard Horde challenges, testing team coordination against escalating threats. The stakes heighten when teams must extract during an indefinite wave of attack, adding a layer of desperate urgency to the survival gameplay.
Playing Horde Siege reveals an open-world quality that fosters emergent gameplay. While teams focus on their immediate objectives, they often find themselves contending with enemy waves in the distance, forcing constant adaptation and tactical repositioning. This dynamic environment demands players constantly assess their surroundings, whether they are securing a supply cache or fighting off approaching hordes of Berserkers.
The combat remains satisfyingly kinetic, relying on the familiar synergy of Gnasher and Longshot. The updated movement system allows for smoother maneuvering during these intense engagements, making dodging fast-moving Locust drones feel more manageable. While managing large groups of enemies, including hulking tanks and multiple Berserkers, requires frantic repositioning and quick reflexes, mastering the flow of defense proves incredibly rewarding.
While the game currently features a simplified class structure with roles like Assault, Breacher, Marksman, and Medic, the focus remains on action. Progression rewards players through performance-based currency, primarily used for defensive structures like turrets or restocking ammunition. With Gears of War: E-Day launching on October 6th, players can look forward to a dynamic multiplayer suite that continues the franchise’s legacy in an exciting new direction.
