Godzilla Devs Explain Why They Aren’t Worried About GTA 6 Release
As the gaming world gears up for major releases, many developers are strategically steering clear of the notoriously competitive month of November. The big one? Grand Theft Auto 6. This seasonal avoidance is the norm, leaving some titles to follow a more scattershot release schedule.
However, not all games follow the seasonal trend. A notable exception is the upcoming remaster of 2002’s Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee, which is scheduled for release in November. This timing, it turns out, was chosen with a unique sense of whimsy by the development team.
Senior designer Simon Strange, a key figure in the project, revealed that the decision to release the remaster on November 3rd was entirely independent of the looming shadow of GTA 6. When asked about the timing, Strange joked that the development team simply didn’t think about the massive juggernaut when picking the date.
“Honestly, it wasn’t even in our heads at all when we were picking the release date. That’s not my business. I make the video games. I’m not too worried about when they come out. If Atari had come to us and said, ‘Wow, we can’t because we think it’s going to affect the sales with GTA’, we would’ve had that discussion. But no one ever said anything.
This perspective highlights how focused the team was on the game itself, rather than external market pressures. Instead, they leaned into a unique opportunity, delighting kaiju fans who celebrate the fact that the King of the Monsters and Barbie are the only two pop culture icons brave enough to face off against Rockstar’s open-world masterpiece.
The choice of November 3rd isn’t just arbitrary; it carries a special significance for the Godzilla community. That date marks the release of the original Gojira film in 1954, making it Godzilla’s official birthday. Strange noted that releasing the remaster on this date felt genuinely respectful to the fans.
“We weren’t looking at the calendar and being worried in any way, or thinking about what other games are coming out because the Godzilla fans are very excited for it,” Strange explained. “They’d buy it on any day that it came out, and putting it out on Godzilla’s birthday, that’s just respectful.”
While the Godzilla remaster enjoyed a special historical nod, the gaming calendar is still buzzing with activity. In the same timeframe, other titles are also making waves. Both Barbie Rewind and Volvy’s Adventure: Reslimed are arriving in close proximity to the anticipated release of GTA 6.
Devolver Digital recently unveiled Volvy’s Adventure: Reslimed, a title described as a “remaster” of a nonexistent remake, slated for release on Steam November 16th. Meanwhile, Rockstar has kept the public informed, having recently shared a lengthy gameplay presentation that has revealed numerous new details about the highly anticipated GTA 6.
