GTA 6 Collector’s Set Outrage Fans Compare to RDR2
Rockstar Games has once again sparked a firestorm among its dedicated fanbase with the announcement of a $400 collector’s set for Grand Theft Auto VI. The controversy? The set, packed with premium merchandise, deliberately excludes the game itself, leading collectors to question the value proposition and draw comparisons to previous, more accessible Rockstar collector’s editions.
This high-stakes collector’s package includes some serious eye candy, most notably a pair of custom Oakley sunglasses. Given the typical cost of high-end eyewear, the inclusion of such exclusive items, while desirable to some, immediately put the price tag into an entirely different category. For many fans, the cost felt wildly disproportionate to the actual content inside the box.
The online response quickly turned critical. Many devotees felt that the sheer cost of the package failed to justify the lack of a physical copy of the game. One user expressed outright frustration, arguing that spending such a large sum on accessories was preferable to paying a premium price for an item that didn’t include the core product they were excited about.
The debate quickly escalated into a historical comparison, drawing parallels to the collector’s editions of previous Rockstar titles. Fans pointed out that this setup feels inconsistent with Rockstar’s past practices. For example, the collector’s box for Red Dead Redemption 2 was priced significantly lower—around $100—and still featured various unique trinkets and replicas, all without including the game itself.
This comparison highlights a perceived disparity: while other titles offered valuable, collectible merchandise at a much more reasonable price point, the GTA 6 offering felt drastically overpriced for its contents. It raises the persistent question of why the newest, biggest installment doesn’t follow the precedent set by Rockstar’s previous collector initiatives.
Furthermore, the absence of a physical disc or steelbook in this edition adds to the friction. While the $100 GTA 5 special edition offered a compelling package that included the game and premium items, the $400 set leaves fans wanting the tangible connection that previous editions provided.
Despite the current collector’s set debate, Rockstar is still delivering on tangible rewards. Physical copies of Grand Theft Auto VI will eventually be released in November, ahead of the launch to allow players ample time to pre-load the game. Additionally, superfans can look forward to exclusive physical CD and vinyl releases of the game’s album, alongside limited-edition DualSense controllers, ensuring there are still plenty of ways to celebrate the world of Los Santos.
