Francis Lawrence, the visionary director behind the acclaimed BioShock franchise, has opened up about his deep love for video games, revealing a surprising affinity for the gaming world that mirrors his cinematic achievements.

Known for directing multiple installments of the Hunger Games films, Lawrence is currently navigating another massive adaptation, helming the live-action BioShock movie for Netflix—a project that has been simmering for nearly two decades. Given his lifelong devotion to the source material, it was only natural for him to discuss the games that truly capture his imagination.

When asked about his absolute favorites, Lawrence immediately pointed toward titans of gaming, including Metal Gear Solid, BioShock, and Call of Duty. He also singled out the original Grand Theft Auto as a standout, noting the revolutionary technology and wildness of that era’s games.

The anticipation for new releases, however, seems to throw a little shade at the film development process. When pressed about the highly anticipated release of GTA 6, Lawrence joked about the timing, hoping that audiences could find time to enjoy both the game and the movie simultaneously.

The journey of the BioShock film itself was not without its dramatic twists. The project was initially brought to Lawrence by Gore Verbinski back in 2009. However, the path to adaptation proved complex. Later, Guillermo del Toro entered the picture, but the creative differences were significant, leading to a very contentious period.

Lawrence admitted that the discussions about adapting the source material were fraught with disagreement, noting that the calls regarding the project were among the most disastrous he had experienced.

Beyond the underwater dystopia of Rapture, Lawrence is also gearing up for another major cinematic undertaking. He is currently preparing to direct a film adaptation of the Red Rising book series, a young adult saga by author Peirce Brown. This project, too, has been a journey through development hell before finally landing a home at Paramount with a committed writer.

Whether diving into the worlds of video games or tackling epic film adaptations, Francis Lawrence continues to demonstrate a passion for complex storytelling and pushing the boundaries of what audiences expect from blockbuster entertainment.
