GTA 6 Trailer 1: An unfinished look
The journey to creating Grand Theft Auto VI has been as much an adventure as the game itself. From the initial concept to the final launch, the development process for the next big title has been framed by a clear, evocative vision that guides the entire creative effort.
When the first trailer for GTA 6 dropped in December 2023, it showcased a world that felt vibrant, yet still in the early stages of development. Rockstar North boss Rob Nelson reflected on this initial phase, noting that the creative direction was anchored by a guiding principle. He described Tom Petty’s song, “Love is a Long Road”, as a sort of mission statement—a rallying cry for the team to pull the sprawling vision together.
“You don’t have the game fully formed when you start; you have an idea of what it’s going to be,” Nelson explained. “But you really have to push hard to pull that together. When this team manages to do that, and it’s made with everything they have, it’s put together in such a way that it helps be a bit of a guiding light of what it needs to feel like.”
The process didn’t stop at the screen. Once the developers settled on the setting—Vice City, AKA Miami—they sought to immerse themselves in the environment firsthand. One of the first steps taken by the team was to physically travel to the location.
“We’ll go there. And just feel it, and go out and just drive around,” Nelson shared. “Almost always on our own at very first, just a handful of people, and we’ll take a ton of pictures, and soak as much of it up as we can and see what speaks to us and start to talk about it and share ideas about what we want to incorporate.”
This dedication to authentic atmosphere informed the design of the game, turning geographical inspiration into a deeply felt experience for players.
Now, the anticipation is mounting as the game moves toward release. Grand Theft Auto VI is slated to arrive on November 19 for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S platforms.
The demand for the game has been staggering, demonstrating the power of the Rockstar brand. Via preorders, the title has already sold 5 million copies, generating over $500 million in revenue.
Rockstar’s partnership with Sony is evident in the launch experience, including a special GTA 6-themed DualSense controller. This exclusive hardware is set to be available for $85, and it goes on sale on September 10 at 7 AM PT / 10 AM ET.
