Gunn changes DCU Batman plans since Brave and the Bold
DCU co-CEO James Gunn is shaking up the foundations of the DC cinematic universe, signaling that the path for Batman is far more flexible than anyone expected.
The recent buzz surrounding The Brave and the Bold has sparked renewed conversation about how the franchise is evolving. Initially, plans for the film were centered on the classic dynamic of Bruce Wayne and his biological son, Damian Wayne, exploring the complex relationship between father and son as they fight crime.
But the creative landscape has shifted dramatically. When pressed by fans about the changes since the initial 2023 announcement, Gunn offered a simple, yet telling, response: “Yep.”
This brevity hints at a significant pivot. Currently, there is no official casting for a DCU Batman, and he has only appeared briefly in silhouette within the shared universe. This newfound ambiguity provides an exciting amount of creative freedom for the upcoming project, allowing the vision to develop in any direction.
While the DCU is focusing on its own interpretation of the iconic hero, there is also a separate, parallel story unfolding in the Elseworlds realm. Matt Reeves’s vision for The Batman 2 remains on its own track, entirely independent of the main DCU continuity.
The production of this Elseworlds title is currently navigating a temporary change. To help the project reach its finish line, director Steven Soderbergh has stepped in to take over principal photography, allowing Reeves to address a personal matter while ensuring the film is completed.
Fans can look forward to The Batman 2, which is slated for a release on February 18, 2028. Meanwhile, the DCU schedule remains busy with other exciting projects, including Clayface, set to arrive on October 23.
As the DC universe continues to expand, the Batman saga is proving that sometimes the most exciting stories are the ones that embrace the unexpected.
