The DC Universe is celebrating a milestone, and the spotlight is firmly on the unsettling transformation of a beloved character. James Gunn, the head of DC Studios, recently shared glowing praise for Tom Rhys Harries’ performance as Clayface, adding an undeniable emotional depth to the cinematic offering.

Gunn’s reaction touched on the profound nature of the role. He noted that while watching someone become a monster is one thing, feeling the anguish of what that person is losing along the way is another entirely. He described Harries’ portrayal as bringing an emotional weight to the horror that felt incredibly personal.

This praise comes as the DCU moves forward with the Clayface property, a character whose concept has existed in comic books for decades. While the idea of a shapeshifting villain predates the current iteration, the character gained significant traction, particularly following its appearances in iconic works like Batman: The Animated Series.

The history of the Clayface character is rich, featuring various interpretations. Earlier versions were brought to life by actors like Basil Karlo, who portrayed the character in Harley Quinn and Batman: Arkham City.

For this latest cinematic venture, the focus is squarely on Matt Hagen, who debuted the character in DETECTIVE COMICS #298. This latest iteration follows previous appearances in animated series such as Creature Commandos before hitting the big screen.

Director James Watkins opted to keep the focus firmly on the immediate narrative. When asked about the absence of Batman in the unfolding story, Watkins explained his creative choice. He stated that because the story is fundamentally about a city of a very many million people and the journey of Matt Hagen, referencing Gotham would have felt too distracting. Instead, he wanted to be honest to the story at hand.

Beyond the emotional performance, the film has also proven to be a commercial success. Clayface has managed to surpass its initial budget in the opening weekend, demonstrating strong audience appetite for this particular DC horror story. It is now tracking to become one of the most profitable films of the decade.
