The future of the Halo franchise is getting a major shake-up, promising a fresh, dedicated vision for the series. Microsoft and Activision have officially announced a significant structural change, carving out a new path for the franchise development that promises both ambitious creative freedom and complex business realignment.

Activision will now develop the next chapter of Halo with a newly assembled, purpose-built team within Halo Studios. This initiative establishes a distinct creative home for the franchise, ensuring that the development of the next game remains singularly focused on honoring the Halo universe and its legacy.

Activision President Rob Kostich outlined this ambition, stating that the goal is to create the greatest Halo game ever, worthy of its history, while staying true to what made players love it in the first place. He emphasized that the team being assembled is unique in its capability and talent, ready to deliver this next chapter directly to the community.

However, this exciting creative pivot comes amidst broader corporate shifts that affect the studio’s operations. Microsoft has confirmed that Halo Studios will be impacted by a new wave of layoffs, affecting a total of 268 people across Halo Studios, other Xbox developers, and Xbox Game Studios management.

This restructuring reflects a larger strategy aimed at strengthening corporate franchises. Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty explained that the goal is to achieve this by operating fewer business units, aligning closely related groups, and focusing publishing expertise across the board.

The realignment extends beyond Halo. Other major properties are also being consolidated: World’s Edge (Age of Empires) and Rare (Sea of Thieves) will now fall under the Activision umbrella. Meanwhile, Obsidian Entertainment, which handles projects like Fallout, will be placed under Bethesda’s remit, and Playground and Turn 10 have merged into a single studio.

This corporate organization brings a fascinating new dynamic to the industry, where development teams are being strategically placed to maximize franchise strength. While the focus remains on delivering exceptional games, the process involves major internal reconfigurations across the Xbox and Activision ecosystem.
