The world of indie gaming has been largely dominated by the charming, cozy atmosphere of Stardew Valley. But behind the idyllic fields and charming pixel art is the mind of Eric Barone, or ConcernedApe, a developer whose focus has always been on meticulous detail and player experience.

Now, Barone is tackling a new project, Haunted Chocolatier, a follow-up that promises a stark departure. While the anticipation for this new title is immense, progress has been slower than expected, leading Barone to admit he was feeling a little embarrassed about the ongoing process of development.

When speaking about the difference between the two games, Barone revealed that Haunted Chocolatier is fundamentally different. Where Stardew Valley is a delightful town game, Haunted Chocolatier leans into a more “metaphysical” setting and shifts the genre entirely into an action RPG. It’s less about farming and more about adventuring, monster-slaying, and hunting for powerful equipment.

This shift in focus reflects Barone’s core philosophy: that every element of a game must be perfectly crafted. He is known for obsessing over the user interface, stressing that elements players interact with often need to be seamless, intuitive, and aesthetically pleasing. For Barone, even something as simple as the recipe book requires careful iteration to ensure the data is presented in an appealing, organized, and delightful way, rather than overwhelming the player.

To maintain this standard, Barone has deliberately kept Haunted Chocolatier under wraps, preferring to wait until the project is fully realized. He expressed a desire to serve a “fully baked bread” rather than a half-baked one, fearing that early reveals might set expectations that the final product cannot meet.

The demands of balancing these creative endeavors are significant. Barone has expanded his team to allow him more dedicated time for the new project, a crucial step in managing the relentless cycle of creation. While updating his successful title, he employs a collaborative approach, setting the creative direction while allowing the team to execute the details. This approach has helped him shift his focus, though he admits that switching gears between projects remains a difficult discipline.
