Henry Cavill produces Warhammer 40K animation at Amazon

The vast, gothic universe of Warhammer 40,000 is gearing up for a fresh animated adventure on Prime Video, and it’s being brought to life with the involvement of a major Hollywood star. Beyond the long-gestating live-action series that stars Henry Cavill, this new animated venture promises to explore the epic scale of the Warhammer world in brand new ways.

This forthcoming animated show is built directly upon existing material, spinning off from a Warhammer 40,000 episode within Amazon’s video game-themed anthology, Secret Level. This foundation provides fertile ground for massive storytelling, with the goal of building on the established lore rather than simply presenting standalone tales.

The creative vision behind the animated series is bolstered by an impressive team. Henry Cavill is involved in executive production alongside Tim Miller, who is known for his work as a co-founder of visual effects and animation house Blur Studios. Adding to the creative pedigree, the original director of the source material, Dave Wilson, co-created the foundation episodes alongside John Orloff of Band of Brothers.

The animated narrative will focus on The Deathwatch, a decentralized group of specialist marines tasked with hunting down alien threats across the grim darkness of the far future. This new series offers an opportunity to delve into the magnificent and often brutal realities of this massive setting.

While anticipation builds for the animated feature, there is ongoing activity surrounding the broader Warhammer franchise development. Games Workshop CEO Kevin Rountree recently shared insights from the company’s latest earnings report, revealing further steps in expanding the lore.

Rountree also confirmed that Master of Horror Mike Flanagan has joined the live-action project as a writer, adding depth to the visual narrative. Furthermore, there are plans for continued expansion within the anthology format, with another Warhammer-themed episode slated for Secret Level season 2, set in the Age of Sigmar universe.

The journey from concept to screen for a project of this magnitude often takes considerable time. Although Henry Cavill’s initial link to the Warhammer series was revealed in late 2022, the process of developing such an enormous world requires patience. Fans are eagerly awaiting this animated feature, hoping it serves as a spectacular launchpad for even larger narratives within the epic Warhammer cosmos.
