The journey to creating a massive open-world phenomenon is rarely a straight line, especially for a studio as legendary as Rockstar Games. When speaking about the sprawling scope of Grand Theft Auto 6, Rob Nelson, head of Rockstar North co-studio and lead developer, offered some fascinating insight into the long road that led to the game’s realization.

The anticipation for the next entry in the iconic crime series has been intense, marking a thirteen-year wait since the release of Grand Theft Auto V. While fans eagerly await the new world, the development process itself involved some strategic pivots that shaped the final product.

The roots of the modern GTA saga trace back to a concept that initially aimed to encompass a broader, continental vision. In 2015, Rockstar staffers began their initial research trip to Miami, where they conceived of a concept dubbed Project Americas. This early vision aimed to map out areas spanning both North and South America, setting the stage for an ambitious, cross-continental experience.

The initial plan was ambitious: to have Rockstar North develop GTA 6 concurrently with Rockstar San Diego’s monumental effort on Red Dead Redemption 2. This parallel development strategy was meant to leverage the expertise of both studios simultaneously.

However, as the scope of Red Dead Redemption 2 expanded into an epic Western saga, a crucial adjustment was necessary. Nelson explained that the sheer scale of the western experience required Rockstar’s full attention, meaning the GTA 6 project had to be temporarily set aside and pushed back to allow the western epic to reach its final, breathtaking quality.

This strategic decision, while causing a pause, proved to be a masterstroke. Nelson noted that when GTA 6 finally arrived, the groundwork and assets built during the preceding years would pay off in spectacular fashion.

Today, the focus has sharpened considerably. While Rockstar Games continues its tradition of juggling multiple titles across its eleven studios, Nelson confirmed that the bulk of the company’s talent is now dedicated to a single project at any given time, ensuring that the vision for GTA 6 is fully realized.
