I Can’t Create A Battle Like This Miyamoto on Mario’s Bowser Fights
When you think of classic video game showdowns, you probably picture the epic battles Mario has with Bowser. But behind the bright, colorful world of Super Mario Bros., there’s a fascinating design philosophy that completely redefines the concept of a boss fight.
Legendary creator Shigeru Miyamoto recently opened up about the creative process behind these iconic jump-based finales, revealing a surprising truth: Mario doesn’t actually fight Bowser.
At a recent press conference celebrating his Order of Culture award, Miyamoto discussed the thought process that led to this non-violent approach. “The most intriguing aspect of Super Mario,” he explained, “is that Mario doesn’t actually fight Bowser.”
Miyamoto admitted that designing a traditional battle proved to be a difficult hurdle. “Normally, if there’s a boss at the end, you have to fight him, right?” he noted. “But creating a battle is difficult, and we were really struggling with how to do it.”
Instead of focusing on combat, the developers chose to use the game’s core mechanics—the precise jumps and platforming—as the ultimate method of progression. The jump-based finales turned the confrontation into a dynamic test of skill and timing, seamlessly integrating the action with the game’s movement system.
This decision elevated the experience, transforming a simple confrontation into a memorable, physics-based challenge that remains one of the most beloved moments in gaming history.
