John Goodman joins The Last of Us Season 3 cast
HBO is continuing to stir the waters of gaming-inspired drama, announcing fresh casting details for the upcoming third season of The Last of Us. The lineup promises a potent mix of game veterans and newcomers, bringing a fresh dynamic to the post-apocalyptic world.
At the heart of the casting are Laura Bailey and Ian Alexander, who will step into key roles. Bailey is set to portray Elizabeth, one of the Seraphite leaders, while Alexander will play Paco. Adding depth to the ensemble is prolific veteran actor John Goodman, who will join the cast as Joey and Paco, reportedly among the group known as the “Heroes of the Highway”.
The series already features several actors from the games, continuing the tradition of bringing characters to life from familiar worlds. Bailey, who brought a memorable and controversial performance as Abby, will continue her journey on the show. Meanwhile, Kaitlyn Dever will play Abby, and Kyriana Kratter is slated to take on the role of Lev.
The involvement of stars from the source material is broadening, with other familiar faces also contributing to the narrative. Merle Dandridge and Jeffrey Wright are set to reprise their roles as Marlene and Isaac, respectively. Ashley Johnson, who played Ellie in the games, will also be on the show, bringing the emotional weight of the narrative forward.
This ensemble shift highlights the complex, layered world of the series. While the performance of Abby has generated significant attention—even controversy—it has undeniably cemented her place in the story.
Beyond the actors, the conversation about the future of the series is equally heated. Programming boss Casey Bloys has suggested that Season 3 might be the final chapter for The Last of Us, though showrunner Craig Mazin is reportedly plotting out a different path. Mazin has previously indicated that he felt four seasons were needed to fully wrap up the story, though the possibility of condensing the narrative into a single long season is also being considered.
A significant creative change has also been noted. Naughty Dog is reportedly stepping away from creative involvement in Season 3, and creator Neil Druckmann has stepped back from writing and directing to focus on his work on the games themselves, including directing Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. This creative separation has opened up speculation about the direction the series will take next, ensuring that the story continues to evolve beyond its source material.
