Vault Dwellers Get Early Access: Fallout 76 Public Test Server Launches on Xbox

Attention Fallout 76 players! The community has been waiting for a chance to dip into the Vault and see what’s coming next, and the time has finally arrived. Xbox has opened the gates to the Fallout 76 Public Test Server (PTS), offering a unique opportunity for Insiders to experience upcoming series updates before they hit the live game. If you own Fallout 76 or have access through an active Game Pass subscription, you can jump in and test the waters with the community.

This isn’t just a casual peek; this test server is designed to showcase major performance and graphical enhancements for the Xbox Series platforms. Players on the PTS will get a head start on features that will make the experience smoother and more immersive, setting a new benchmark for how Fallout 76 runs on modern hardware.

A Leap Forward in Performance

The core promise of this test server is a significant hardware upgrade. By testing the game on the PTS, players get to experience targeted performance boosts that maximize the potential of the Xbox Series X|S consoles. This includes access to targeted 60 FPS gameplay and the capability to run at 4K resolution on the Series X. Furthermore, compatible displays will benefit from Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support, bringing a new level of fluidity and visual clarity to the wasteland.

This update represents a major step towards ensuring that Fallout 76 feels comfortable and responsive across all console hardware. It allows developers to utilize the hardware more efficiently, paving the way for future updates that bring even greater fidelity to the experience.

What You Need to Know Before Diving In

While the experience is exciting, it is important to understand the nature of the Public Test Server. Since this is a testing environment, there are specific rules players need to keep in mind to ensure a smooth experience.

You will have access to your existing character snapshots, weapons, armor, items, and access to C.A.M.P.S. for testing. However, there are a few limitations to note:

  • The Atomic Shop will not be active during the PTS.
  • Seasonal content is currently inactive.
  • Progression made in the PTS does not transfer over to the live game, and character progression does not persist between test cycles.
  • The PTS Locker, located outside Vault 76, is available for accessing mods, ammo, and weapons based on community feedback.
  • Because you are testing content that is not final, expect bugs and issues. This is an expected part of the development process.
  • All new content tested is currently limited to English, as translations are still underway.

How to Join the Fun

Ready to join the test? Access is straightforward. On your Xbox Series X|S console, sign in and launch the XBOX Insider Hub app. Navigate to Previews > Fallout 76 (Public Test Server) and select Join. Follow the prompts to wait for registration and then install the Fallout 76 (Public Test Server) application from the Store.

If you encounter any issues or don’t see the preview, ensure you own Fallout 76 or have access via a Game Pass subscription. For the most detailed feedback and bug reporting, the Bethesda Studios Discord server is the primary hub. Be sure to visit the Bethesda Studios Discord server and check the #server-roles channel for instructions on accessing the dedicated PTS channels. Let’s test the future of the wasteland together!
