After fourteen years guiding the galaxy far, far away, Kathleen Kennedy is taking a well-deserved step back from the helm of Lucasfilm. As she prepares to step down as president early this year, the departure marks an emotional transition, filled with a unique blend of relief and reflection on a monumental legacy.

When asked about the experience, Kennedy admitted she felt a sense of relief. “These jobs are not easy,” she shared, acknowledging the immense pressure that comes with overseeing a franchise as iconic as Star Wars. Stepping into a role that George Lucas created was described as an incredible challenge, highlighting the weight of carrying such a celebrated history.

Kennedy’s tenure at Lucasfilm, which began in 2012 following Disney’s acquisition, was marked by significant milestones. She oversaw some stellar creative successes, including the impactful sequel trilogy and the development of series like Ahsoka. Yet, the journey was complex, involving navigating the passionate, sometimes divergent, reactions of a devoted fanbase to various projects.

The true difficulty, Kennedy noted, lay in balancing the need to honor the existing mythology while striving to forge something entirely new. “You’ve got people where this means a lot to them,” she explained, emphasizing the delicate art of creating originality while respecting the history of a beloved franchise. Finding that balance proved to be the toughest, yet most rewarding, aspect of the role.

Among her proudest accomplishments were the relaunch of the franchise starting with The Force Awakens in 2015, and the expansion of the universe with titles like Andor and The Mandalorian. These projects cemented her role as a pivotal figure in shaping the modern Star Wars narrative.

Before leading Lucasfilm, Kennedy brought a wealth of cinematic experience to the table, having long collaborated with legendary director Steven Spielberg on classics like Jurassic Park and Back to the Future. This background informed her approach to storytelling, and she even sought advice from George Lucas himself on the direction of the narrative.

In a moment that speaks to the deep connection between creators, Kennedy recalled Lucas’s advice on storytelling: “No, no, it’s all here,” she said, pointing to her head, suggesting that the necessary direction resided within her.

While Kennedy is stepping down from the presidency, her involvement in the Star Wars universe continues. She remains actively engaged, producing upcoming projects such as Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter, set for release in 2027, demonstrating that her connection to the saga remains vibrant as the franchise continues its exciting journey.
