Four years after the epic saga of Game of Thrones concluded, star Kit Harington is finding a new kind of comfort, suggesting that the fantasy world still holds a place in his heart, even if the path he initially envisioned has taken a detour.

When the spin-off for Jon Snow was first discussed, Harington was intensely invested. He was part of a group—including HBO and George R.R. Martin—that pushed for the project, believing that if they didn’t find the right story, it was better to leave it unfinished. Yet, time and experience shifted his perspective. He eventually realized that while the initial enthusiasm was high, the vision wasn’t quite right for him at that moment.

The spin-off had been in development for two years, slated to follow Snow’s exile behind the wall, free from his direwolf and sword. However, the project was eventually scrapped because, as Harington reflected, it simply wasn’t “exciting enough,” and HBO felt the direction was too downbeat.

This shift in perspective allowed for a fresh start. Earlier this year, the idea was reignited when Drops of God’s Quoc Dang Tran joined the project, refreshing the concept and setting the tale in Essos. Intriguingly, the narrative then incorporated Snow’s sister, Arya Stark, bringing a new dynamic to the exiled character.

While the fate of the spin-off shifted, Harington’s journey into the fantasy world continued with another major franchise. Now, the actor has stepped into the shoes of Gilderoy Lockhart, the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, in the second season of HBO’s Harry Potter series.

This new role offers Harington a different kind of escapism. Having navigated the complexities of Westeros, he found solace in the world of magic. He noted that the experience of reading the Harry Potter books provided him with support during a challenging time in his personal life, adding that Lockhart’s own addiction to self-obsession felt like a small step for him.

From the harsh political landscapes of Westeros to the magical realms of Hogwarts, Harington’s career continues to weave an impressive tapestry of fantasy, proving that even when a path is canceled, the adventure always finds a way to lead the way.
